FAQ

 Frequently Asked Questions

-ARE THERE OTHER TYPES OF THERAPY THAT DON’T REQUIRE TALKING THE WHOLE TIME?

Yes, there are many forms of therapy and wellness activities at our office, for example: walk and talk therapy or play therapy. In addition to mental health therapy, we also offer opportunities for other wellness services such as massage, yoga, fitness, aromatherapy, wellness workshops, and more.

-WHAT IF I KNOW MY THERAPIST FROM OUTSIDE THERAPY?

If you know your therapist from outside of therapy, another therapist will be made available to you to prevent a conflict of interest. We take privacy and confidentiality very seriously. If there is a known conflict, we take great care to protect your privacy.

-CAN I SWITCH MY IN-PERSON APPOINTMENT TO TELEHEALTH IF I AM FEELING SICK OR RUNNING LATE?

Yes. We encourage you to stay home and reschedule your session if you don’t feel well. If you're running late and you know that you cannot make it to your appointment on time, you can switch your appointment to Telehealth. Please be sure to review the guidelines for Telehealth prior to your appointment. Remember the most effective way to reach your provider is via their email address.

-CAN I DO MY TELEHEALTH APPOINTMENT WHILE OUT OF TOWN OR ON VACATION?

This depends on the type of license your provider holds. Be sure to discuss your travel plans with your provider before making session appointments during your vacations or travel if you plan to be out of the state of Maryland.

-HOW LONG IS A THERAPY SESSION?

An average therapy session is 60 minutes, but if you or your therapist determine that a different session duration is more appropriate, that can be arranged.

-HOW OFTEN DO WE MEET?

This is completely up to you and your therapist, and we do our best to make your therapy sessions fit seamlessly into your schedule. At the beginning of your work together, it is best to meet more frequently so weekly sessions will likely be recommended. This allows for rapport to be built, your needs to be assessed, and a treatment plan to be established to ensure your goals are met.

-WHAT IS A "GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE?"

A good faith estimate is an estimate of the amount of money you will be paying for your therapy service. This is based on a federal law to protect consumers from paying higher costs for medical care than expected. Currently, only those clients who are NOT using their insurance for services will receive a good faith estimate.

If you don’t have health insurance, we have many providers/therapists that accept self-pay or "out of pocket" payment.

-WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY INTAKE APPOINTMENT?

During your first appointment with your provider, you can expect to review your demographic and historical information with your provider. We will discuss with you the reasons you are seeking therapy, your history as it relates to your current health and well being, as well as being to discuss your goals for counseling. The first session involves a lot of paperwork and questions, so know that is normal for the first session.

-HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY THERAPIST IS A GOOD FIT FOR ME?

You and your therapist will go through an intake session to get to know each other. If you would like to have a “sneak peek” of your therapist you can review their online bios here! We recommend giving your therapist 3-4 sessions to ensure a good fit. The first couple of sessions involve a lot of paperwork and information gathering. Allow 1-2 more sessions to dive into the work with your therapist to really know if it is a good fit.

-WHAT DOES AND DOES NOT REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL IN THERAPY?

What we discuss in counseling in confidential except under a few circumstances. If you are a danger to yourself, someone else or if someone is hurting you then we may need to make reports to the appropriate authorities to keep you and others safe. When working with couples and children, there are other limits and considerations. Within couples' sessions, there is no confidential information from the other party - all information can be shared between the couple. Based on the age of the child, there are a variety of factors to consider, so this is best to discuss with your individual therapist.

-WHAT IF I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO TALK ABOUT OR WHERE TO START?

If you're not sure what to talk about or where to start, your therapist will guide the conversation. As you become more comfortable in your sessions, you can redirect your conversations as needed.

-WHAT IF THERE IS A TOPIC THAT I AM NOT WILLING/READY TO DISCUSS IN THERAPY?

It is completely normal and anticipated to have topics you're not ready to discuss. You are empowered to discuss topics at your own pace.

-CAN MY THERAPIST PRESCRIBE MEDS?

No, only a licensed psychiatrist, medical doctor and/or nurse practitioner can prescribe medication. If your therapist determines that they may be helpful, you can be referred to a psychiatrist/psychiatric nurse practitioner for further assessment.

-WHAT IF I DO/DON'T WANT TO TAKE MEDICATION?

If you do want to take medication, you can talk to your provider about options that may work for you, and if you don’t want to take medication, you can discuss alternatives with your provider.

-WHAT IF I WANT TO DISCONTINUE THERAPY OR SWITCH TO A DIFFERENT PROVIDER?

If you think that your current provider or therapy office isn’t suiting your needs, please discuss discontinuing therapy and/or the possibility of a referral to a new provider/office in the area. This occurrence is understood as part of the process, and our providers welcome the opportunity to direct our clients to the best possible treatment for you, even if it is outside of our practice.
